Marc Bolan, born Mark Feld in East London, was a visionary artist renowned for his pioneering role in glam rock and his innate talent for self-invention. From a young age, he possessed a keen eye for fashion and an ambition for fame, which would shape his distinctive artistic persona.

Bolan's musical odyssey commenced in the mid-1960s. After brief forays as a mod model and a member of the proto-punk outfit John's Children, he co-founded the acoustic duo Tyrannosaurus Rex. This initial phase of his career was characterized by whimsical, Tolkien-inspired lyrics and intricate percussion, cultivating a devoted following within the underground hippie movement.

However, Bolan's destiny was intertwined with the magnetic pull of the mainstream spotlight. By streamlining the band's name to T. Rex and electrifying his sound with his Gibson Les Paul, he is widely credited with inventing the glam rock genre. His iconic 1971 performance on the television show Top of the Pops, delivering a rousing rendition of "Hot Love" with signature glitter adorning his eyes, is often cited as the pivotal moment that ignited the glam rock phenomenon. This performance profoundly influenced his contemporaries, including his friend and occasional rival, David Bowie.

Between 1970 and 1973, T. Rex, led by Bolan, achieved peak commercial success, becoming a formidable hit-making entity. They produced a string of enduring anthems such as "Get It On" (also known as "Bang a Gong"), "Jeepster," and "20th Century Boy." Bolan's musical style was a captivating amalgamation of the straightforwardness of 1950s rock-and-roll, the surrealist flair of poetry, and a potent, often sexually charged energy. This sound was inseparable from his flamboyant visual aesthetic, defined by silk scarves and towering platform boots.

Although his commercial popularity experienced a decline mid-decade, coinciding with the pressures of stardom and evolving musical tastes, Bolan consistently remained a significant tastemaker. In the final year of his life, he hosted his own television program, "Marc," where he actively supported and promoted emerging punk bands like The Damned and Generation X. This demonstrated his continued relevance and influence on a new generation of artists.

T.Rex made only one TOTP performance in support of 20th Century Boy, recorded on 28 February 1973, but the BBC did not keep a copy. However, via a licensing agreement with ZDF in Germany the bulk of the performance was broadcast on their “Disco 73” programme and a copy was retained. Demon Music Group have now been able to combine this with the Super 8 footage to complete the performance for the first time.  
20th Century Boy remains one of the most-loved T.Rex tracks with its distinctive guitar riff instantly recognised for its power and style. It has been widely covered, including by Def Leppard, Placebo with David Bowie and Siouxsie & The Banshees.

T.Rex – the creation of Marc Bolan, the band’s leader, creative director and sole song-writer – was born out of the late-1960s’ hippy counter-culture. Bolan’s road to superstardom took him from 18-year-old folk singer to proto-punk guitar thrasher in John’s Children, via the blissed-out Tolkien-washed mysticism of Tyrannosaurus Rex to fully-fledged Glam Rock idol in T.Rex. Following their breakthrough 1970 hit, Ride A White Swan, T.Rex became the biggest pop phenomenon of the new decade, scoring chart-topping, award-winning singles and LPs across Europe, the Far East, and Australia, while finding success in North America via the top-10 single Get It On (Bang A Gong) and hit albums Electric Warrior and The Slider. Decades after Bolan’s tragically early death, the influence of T.Rex is still felt across the music world. His status as one of the leading British music stars has recently been recognised with the induction of T.Rex into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
