Philip Parris Lynott (born August 20, 1949, in West Brompton, London, England; died January 4, 1986, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England) was an Irish singer, musician, and songwriter. He was best known as the founder, lead singer, and bassist of the Irish rock band Thin Lizzy. Lynott's distinctive lyrical style often drew on themes of urban life, rebellion, love, and Irish folklore, blending poetic storytelling with hard rock energy. He was a charismatic frontman, renowned for his stage presence and songwriting prowess.

Thin Lizzy, formed in Dublin in 1974, rose to fame in the mid-1970s with hits like "Whiskey in the Jar," "The Boys Are Back in Town," and "Jailbreak." The band's sound was characterized by dual guitar harmonies, often featuring notable guitarists such as Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. Lynott was the principal songwriter and driving force behind the band, guiding them through a series of successful albums, including "Jailbreak" (1976), "Black Rose: A Rock Legend" (1979), and "Thunder and Lightning" (1983).

Beyond Thin Lizzy, Lynott pursued a solo career and also formed the band Grand Slam. His solo work explored a more diverse range of musical styles, often incorporating elements of soul and blues. Notable solo albums include "Solo in Soho" (1980) and "The Phil Lynott Album" (1982). He collaborated with numerous artists throughout his career and left a significant legacy on rock music.

Lynott's influence can be seen in many subsequent rock bands, particularly in the way he fused hard rock with poetic and socially conscious lyrics. His struggles with substance abuse were well-documented and ultimately contributed to his untimely death at the age of 36. Despite his short life, Phil Lynott remains an iconic figure in rock history, celebrated for his artistry and enduring contributions to music.

Thin Lizzy are a hard rock band formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1969. Two of the founding members, drummer Brian Downey and bass guitarist and lead vocalist Phil Lynott, met while still in school. Lynott led the group throughout their recording career of twelve studio albums, writing most of the material. The singles "Whiskey in the Jar" (a traditional Irish ballad), "Jailbreak", and "The Boys Are Back in Town" were major international hits. After Lynott's death in 1986, various incarnations of the band emerged over the years based initially around guitarists Scott Gorham and John Sykes, though Sykes left the band in 2009. Gorham later continued with a new line-up including Downey.
