The Undertones are a seminal Northern Irish punk rock band formed in Derry in 1975. Renowned for their blend of punk energy and melodic, catchy songwriting, they emerged as a significant voice in the late 1970s UK punk scene. Their music often captures themes of teenage life, romance, and the social and political climate of Northern Ireland during The Troubles, all delivered with an infectious enthusiasm and distinctive vocal style from frontman Feargal Sharkey.

Key to their success were singles like "Teenage Kicks" (1978), a universally beloved anthem that perfectly encapsulates youthful exuberance and remains their most iconic track. Other notable singles include "Here Comes the Start of the Story" (1979) and "My Perfect Cousin" (1980), the latter being a sharp, witty commentary on social dynamics.

The band released four studio albums: The Undertones (1980), Hypnotised (1980), Positive Touch (1981), and The Sin of Pride (1983). Their early work is characterized by raw punk energy and pop sensibilities, while later albums explored more mature themes and diverse musical styles, incorporating elements of soul and new wave.

Despite achieving significant critical acclaim and a dedicated following, The Undertones disbanded in 1983. However, the band has reunited multiple times since then, notably in 1999 and 2003, continuing to perform their beloved material to new and old fans alike. Their influence can be heard in subsequent generations of pop-punk and indie bands, cementing their status as enduring icons of punk rock.

One of the great pop singles of the early 80s with the kind of lines `he's got a fur-lined sheepskin jacket, my ma said it cost a packet', `he thinks that I'm a cabbage 'cos I hate University challenge' and the immortal `his mother bought him a synthesizer, got the Human League into advise her' that today's pop stars can only dream of writing. And the video is ace -- look out for the famous subbuteo scene -- what we all did for entertainment in those days. A number 9 hit in 1980 it would be number one for a year now.
